Barbara Nelson plays guitar and sings western swing and traditional cowboy music, as well as time honored standards. She has had two nominations by the WMA for Western Swing cd's. Rick Huff, WMA music critic, has written that "the principle feature of the Nelson releases is her rich, big band style of singing, progressive jazz guitar, and the general swing of the thing." She has performed at Pendleton, Ellensburg, Lewiston, Albuquerque, and Elko for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, as well as other places.
Barbara and her husband Nels live on a ranch near Pendleton, Oregon, where they have raised kids, cattle, sheep, wheat, and horses. When in town, Barbara enjoys joining a group that plays Bluegrass and all types of other music at the local coffee house, Great Pacific. Playing guitar and singing, for both large and small audiences is a privilege, a passion, and a really big part of Barbara's life. What's really fun is singing a song that relates to someone and they react to that. She and her husband Nels collect guitars, but her main "ax" is a custom made Breedlove guitar with fretscape pictures Barbara drew and chose herself. The guitar is awesome and gives out sounds that are beautiful and unique and made her guitar playing improve considerably. What a treat! Happy music.
When I Was A Cowgirl is Barbara's latest CD. There are four other CDs available and one due out in 2011.
