Originally from Oregon, Dave has lived in the West all his life. He left high school to go cowboyin', he ran with a bunch of good ol' farm boys chasing rodeos, riding saddle broncs and having the time of his life.
He went on to punch cows for a cattle company in western Oregon, and then moved on to wrangling horses, horseshoeing, and packing and guiding for outfitters. He packed and guided in the wilds of Alaska for several years. In Montana he took out ten day, 100 mile trips over the Great Divide through the Bob Marshal Wilderness Area. From there he worked a horse outfit in Wyoming. Finally he ended up in Colorado packing for Rocky Mountain National Park where he also was the Park's riding and horsemanship instructor for the new Rangers and Park Staff. Along the way he broke horses in the old west way, ride 'em until they stop bucking.
Dave is the real thing; he's paid his dues in the cowboy world. He has now settled down in Nevada where he has turned his knowledge and stories of the cowboy life into a writing and performance career as a Cowboy Poet.
At present Dave has two Western novels published, The Strawberry Mountain War, and Yates: U.S. Marshal. He also has a collection of his internationally published Western short stories entitled Bronc Buster - Short Stories of the American West. There is also a collection of 30 of Dave's original cowboy poems, with a companion CD; named after the title poem They Still Do That. His latest CD release is a collection of his humorous story poems entitled Snake - Bit
Dave's cowboy poetry style differs from most poets in that he tells a story in rhyme and meter. Although he does traditional cowboy poetry, his specialty is the story. He relates situations, most of which are of a humorous bent, about cowboy life. The cowboy's sense of humor, frustrations, loves, and the unique perspective in which he looks at the world. Dave's stories have been enjoyed and brought laughter to audiences ranging from hundreds in an auditorium to a few listening to him around a campfire.
Dave has headlined shows in Oregon, California, Nevada, and appeared in Arizona and Nebraska He is also a comedy imrov performer, as well as an actor, and has been featured on Tall Tale Tellers for Reno TV, as well as a guest on KOLO TV channel 8 Reno promoting Cowboy Poetry.
The most important thing about Dave's cowboy poetry is that every poem, every word is written by him. It is all one of a kind, original, and having Dave's spin on it. He never uses anyone else's material. When Dave is on stage he is reaching the audience by pulling them into the story with facial expressions and actions. He doesn't just recite, he performs.
